Tram line 96 in Melbourne
Tram line 96 runs between East Brunswick and St Kilda Beach, crossing Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs, city centre and southern bayside districts.
The line connects the residential districts along Nicholson Street with Carlton, Fitzroy, Melbourne Museum, Parliament House, the Bourke Street corridor and Southern Cross Station. South of the city, it serves South Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park and the principal visitor destinations around central St Kilda.
Between South Melbourne and St Kilda, Line 96 operates largely as light rail over the former St Kilda railway alignment. This segregated section is separated from general road traffic and includes several stations adapted from the former railway.
The route therefore combines conventional street-running tramway, the busy central Melbourne corridor and a substantial dedicated light-rail section before returning to street running in St Kilda.
From East Brunswick, Line 96 follows Nicholson Street southwards through Brunswick East, Carlton North and Carlton. It continues past Melbourne Museum and the Royal Exhibition Building before entering central Melbourne near Parliament House.
The route follows Bourke Street through the city, serving Bourke Street Mall and Southern Cross Station. It then continues through Southbank and South Melbourne before joining the former railway alignment through Albert Park and Middle Park.
In St Kilda, Line 96 follows Fitzroy Street and The Esplanade, serving the St Kilda foreshore and Luna Park before continuing along Acland Street to its terminus near St Kilda Beach.
