Tram line 3 in Melbourne
Tram line 3 runs between Melbourne University and Darling Rd/Waverley Rd in Malvern East, serving 51 stops.
The line connects Melbourne University with the city centre, the St Kilda Road arts and cultural precinct, Anzac Station, St Kilda East, Balaclava, Caulfield railway station and the residential areas along Waverley Road.
From January 2009 until October 2023, weekend services operated as Line 3a and followed a longer route via St Kilda Beach. Line 3 now follows its regular route throughout the week.
From Melbourne University, Line 3 runs south along Swanston Street, serving Lincoln Square, RMIT University and Melbourne Central before continuing through the heart of the city past Bourke Street Mall, City Square and Federation Square. It crosses the River Yarra on Princes Bridge and follows St Kilda Road past the Arts Precinct, the Victoria Police Memorial, the Shrine of Remembrance and Anzac Station.
The line continues south along St Kilda Road through Melbourne's inner southern suburbs and passes through St Kilda Junction. After serving the southern section of St Kilda Road, it turns east into Carlisle Street, passing St Kilda Town Hall, Chapel Street and Balaclava railway station. Carlisle Street becomes Balaclava Road as the route continues through St Kilda East and Caulfield North.
After passing Caulfield Park, the line follows Normanby Road and Derby Road past Caulfield Racecourse to Caulfield railway station. It then continues briefly along Dandenong Road before turning into Waverley Road and running east through Malvern East to the tram terminus at Darling Road.
