Tram line 1 in Melbourne
Tram line 1 runs between East Coburg and South Melbourne Beach in Albert Park, serving 47 stops.
The line connects the northern suburbs of Coburg and Brunswick East with Carlton, Melbourne University, the city centre, Melbourne's Arts Precinct, South Melbourne and the Port Phillip Bay foreshore. Within the city centre, it provides access to the State Library, Melbourne Central and Town Hall railway-station complexes.
The current pairing of East Coburg and South Melbourne Beach dates from 1953. However, sections of the route are considerably older: the South Melbourne tracks originated as part of a cable tramway opened in 1890, while the electric tramway north from Carlton towards East Coburg was developed by the Melbourne, Brunswick and Coburg Tramways Trust during the 1910s.
From East Coburg, Line 1 runs south along Nicholson Street through Coburg. Nicholson Street becomes Holmes Street in Brunswick East, after which the route makes a short diversion along Albion Street before continuing south along Lygon Street. It passes through Brunswick East, Brunswick, Carlton North and Carlton, serving Melbourne General Cemetery before turning through Elgin Street to reach Melbourne University and Swanston Street.
The line follows Swanston Street through the university and city-centre districts, passing RMIT University, Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall, City Square and Federation Square. It then crosses the River Yarra on Princes Bridge and follows St Kilda Road to the Arts Precinct.
At the Arts Precinct, Line 1 leaves St Kilda Road and turns west along Southbank Boulevard before continuing through Sturt Street and Eastern Road to Park Street. It crosses South Melbourne from east to west, then follows Montague Street, Bridport Street and Victoria Avenue through Albert Park before terminating beside the foreshore at South Melbourne Beach.
