Tram line 109 in Melbourne
Tram line 109 runs between Box Hill Central in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and Beacon Cove in Port Melbourne.
The line provides a long cross-city connection, linking Box Hill, Mont Albert, Surrey Hills, Balwyn, Deepdene and Kew with Victoria Gardens, Richmond, East Melbourne and central Melbourne. Within the city centre, it follows the Collins Street corridor and serves Southern Cross Station.
Between South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, Line 109 operates largely as light rail over the former Port Melbourne railway alignment. This segregated section is separated from general road traffic and includes several stations adapted from the former railway.
The route combines extensive suburban street running, a journey through central Melbourne and a dedicated light-rail section serving Port Melbourne. Its Beacon Cove terminus is also the closest tram stop to Station Pier and the Port Melbourne cruise terminal.
From Box Hill Central, Line 109 follows Whitehorse Road westwards through Mont Albert, Surrey Hills, Balwyn and Deepdene. It continues through Kew before passing Victoria Gardens and following Victoria Street towards Richmond and the inner city.
The route travels through East Melbourne and enters central Melbourne near Parliament House. It then follows Collins Street through the city centre, serving the central business district and Southern Cross Station before turning south towards South Melbourne.
Beyond South Melbourne, Line 109 joins the former Port Melbourne railway alignment and continues as light rail through the Port Melbourne district. It terminates at Beacon Cove, within walking distance of Station Pier and the waterfront.
