Tram line 11 in Melbourne
Tram line 11 runs between West Preston/Gilbert Rd in Preston and Bourke St/Collins St in the Victoria Harbour precinct of Docklands. Services call at 48 stops in each direction, with a typical end-to-end journey taking approximately 43 minutes.
The line connects the northern suburbs of Preston, Thornbury and Northcote with Fitzroy North, Brunswick Street, St Vincents Plaza, Parliament railway station, central Melbourne, Southern Cross station and Docklands.
The two directions have slightly different stopping patterns. Southbound services call at St Georges Rd/Miller St, while northbound services instead call at McNamara St/Gilbert Rd shortly before reaching West Preston. This means that 49 distinct stop locations are represented across a route with 48 stops in each direction.
The present service was established on 27 July 2014 when the former Line 112 was divided into Lines 11 and 12. The West Preston service had previously been extended along Collins Street to Merchant Street in 2009 and to the present Victoria Harbour terminus at Bourke St/Collins St in January 2014.
From West Preston/Gilbert Rd, Line 11 travels south along Gilbert Road through Preston before turning east along Miller Street. It then turns south onto St Georges Road beside Preston Depot and continues through Thornbury and Northcote. Southbound services call at St Georges Rd/Miller St immediately before joining St Georges Road; in the opposite direction, this stop is omitted.
The line follows the central reservation of St Georges Road through Northcote and Fitzroy North. Near Edinburgh Gardens, it continues onto Brunswick Street and travels south through Fitzroy before turning east along Victoria Parade to St Vincents Plaza.
From St Vincents Plaza, Line 11 follows Gisborne Street and Macarthur Street past Parliament railway station, then turns west onto Collins Street. It crosses central Melbourne, serving Melbourne Town Hall and the Elizabeth Street and William Street tram corridors before passing the two Collins Street stops adjoining Southern Cross station.
West of Southern Cross station, the line enters Docklands and continues along Collins Street through Batman’s Hill and the Victoria Harbour precinct. It terminates at Bourke St/Collins St, formerly listed as Victoria Harbour Docklands.
In the opposite direction, services travel from Bourke St/Collins St back to West Preston. Shortly before reaching the terminus, they call at the northbound-only McNamara St/Gilbert Rd stop; this stop is not served by southbound trams leaving West Preston.
