Tram line 57 runs between West Maribyrnong and Flinders Street Station in central Melbourne, serving 38 stops.
The line connects Maribyrnong and Melbourne’s inner north-western suburbs with the Melbourne Showgrounds, Flemington Racecourse, Newmarket Station, North Melbourne, Queen Victoria Market and the central business district.
Line 57 was introduced on 22 December 1940, when the tramway was extended from the Maribyrnong River to West Maribyrnong. The route incorporates sections of Melbourne’s former cable tram network together with later electric tramway extensions.
From West Maribyrnong, Line 57 follows Cordite Avenue and Raleigh Road before continuing along Maribyrnong Road. It crosses the Maribyrnong River and runs through Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale, following Union Road towards the Melbourne Showgrounds.
The route continues through Flemington along Epsom Road and Racecourse Road, serving Flemington Racecourse and Newmarket Station. It then passes through Kensington and follows Flemington Road and Abbotsford Street into North Melbourne, serving the neighbourhood around North Melbourne Town Hall.
Line 57 continues along Victoria Street past Queen Victoria Market before turning into Elizabeth Street. It runs south through the central business district, serving Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall and Collins Street before terminating outside Flinders Street Station.
