Tram line 59 in Melbourne
Tram line 59 runs between Airport West and Flinders Street Station, linking the north-western suburbs with central Melbourne.
The line connects Airport West, Niddrie, Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Flemington with Flemington Bridge Station, the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Central and the principal shopping streets of the city centre.
The stopping pattern differs slightly by direction near the junction of Matthews Avenue and Keilor Road. Airport West-bound trams additionally serve Matthews Ave/Keilor Rd, while city-bound services continue directly from Keilor Rd/Matthews Ave along Keilor Road.
From Airport West, Line 59 follows Matthews Avenue before turning onto Keilor Road. It runs through Niddrie and Essendon North, then follows Mount Alexander Road to Fletcher Street. The route continues through the Essendon shopping district and turns onto Pascoe Vale Road, serving Queens Park and the Moonee Valley Civic Centre before reaching Moonee Ponds Junction.
From Moonee Ponds Junction, Line 59 follows Mount Alexander Road through Ascot Vale and Travancore, passing Essendon Tram Depot and Mount Alexander College. It continues through the Djerring Flemington Hub and reaches Flemington Bridge Station before joining Flemington Road.
The line follows Flemington Road past the Royal Children’s Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital, then turns into Elizabeth Street. It continues through the northern city centre, serving Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall and Collins Street before terminating at Flinders Street Station.
