Tram line 1 in Graz

About Line 1

Tram line 1 currently runs between Eggenberg/UKH in western Graz and LKH Med Uni/Klinikum Nord in the northeast. It connects Eggenberg Palace, Graz Hauptbahnhof, the historic city centre, the University of Music and Performing Arts and Graz University Hospital.

Under normal conditions, line 1 leaves the present route after Reiterkaserne and continues through Tegetthoffplatz, Lenaugasse, Hilmteich/Botanischer Garten, Schönbrunngasse, Mariagrün, Kroisbach, St. Johann, Rettenbach, Wagnesweg, Waldhof/Rettenbachklamm, Teichhof and Tannhof to Mariatrost.

The Mariatrost branch follows the alignment of the former metre-gauge Graz–Mariatrost local railway, which opened in 1898 and was later converted to standard gauge and incorporated into the urban tram network. The outer section has retained an interurban character, passing through increasingly wooded suburban surroundings before reaching the former railway depot at Mariatrost, now occupied by the Graz Tramway Museum.

Replacement buses have served the Mariatrost branch since November 2025 while sections of the formerly single-track route are reconstructed and converted to double track. The work also includes bridge and track renewal, modernised stops, new utility infrastructure and improvements to the electrical supply.

Since 11 July 2026, the tram closure has extended westwards to Reiterkaserne. Line 1 therefore continues over the university hospital corridor to LKH Med Uni/Klinikum Nord, while replacement bus E1 connects Reiterkaserne with Mariatrost. Construction is scheduled to continue through 2027 and into 2028, after which line 1 is expected to return to its usual route.
