Tram line NLR in Newcastle
Newcastle Light Rail route NLR runs for 2.7 kilometres between Newcastle Interchange in Wickham and Newcastle Beach in Newcastle East. It connects the railway interchange with Honeysuckle, Newcastle city centre, Queens Wharf and the beachfront. The complete journey takes approximately 12 minutes, with services operating from early morning until after midnight every day.
Starting at Newcastle Interchange, the line runs east from Wickham, initially following a short section of the former Newcastle railway corridor and serving Honeysuckle. Near Worth Place, it joins Hunter Street and continues through the city centre to Civic and Crown Street.
Beyond Crown Street, the route continues east through the city centre before joining Scott Street and serving Queens Wharf, close to the ferry terminal. It then follows Scott Street through Newcastle East before reaching its eastern terminus at Newcastle Beach beside Pacific Park.

Newcastle Interchange is a major tram, bus and rail interchange located on Station Street in Wickham. The railway station opened in October 2017, replacing the former Wickham station and becoming the terminus for Central Coast & Newcastle Line and Hunter Line services. Light-rail services began in February 2019, while the adjoining bus interchange opened in July 2020.
The stop provides connections to bus and rail services.
Honeysuckle tram stop is located on Kuwumi Place beside Hunter Street in Newcastle West. It serves the western end of the redeveloped Honeysuckle waterfront precinct, with the University of Newcastle’s Q Building and the surrounding commercial and residential developments within walking distance.
Civic tram stop is located in the centre of Hunter Street beside Museum Park, which was created from the former Civic railway station after it closed in 2014. The preserved station building now houses the Newcastle Visitor Information Centre, while Newcastle Museum, Civic Theatre, City Hall and the University of Newcastle’s city campus are also nearby.
Crown Street tram stop is located in the centre of Hunter Street at its junction with Crown Street, serving the eastern part of Newcastle’s central business district. The Hunter Street Mall and surrounding East End shopping and dining precinct are nearby, while Christ Church Cathedral is within walking distance uphill.
Queens Wharf tram stop is located on Scott Street near Market Street, serving Newcastle’s harbourfront and the eastern city centre. A pedestrian route connects the stop with Queens Wharf ferry terminal and its service across the Hunter River to Stockton. The preserved former Newcastle railway signal box is located opposite the stop.
Newcastle Beach is the eastern terminus of Newcastle Light Rail and is located on Scott Street at its junction with Pacific Street, beside Pacific Park. It provides access to Newcastle Beach, with the Newcastle Ocean Baths, Foreshore Park and the coastal Bather’s Way also within walking distance.
