About Edinburgh's tram line

Edinburgh’s single tram line links the airport and western business districts with the city centre, Leith and Newhaven. It serves destinations including Murrayfield Stadium, Princes Street and Ocean Terminal, with rail connections at Edinburgh Gateway, Edinburgh Park Station, Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley via St Andrew Square.

The original airport-to-city-centre route opened in 2014. The extension through Leith to Newhaven opened on 7 June 2023, bringing trams back to the waterfront.

Route from Edinburgh Airport to Newhaven

From Edinburgh Airport, the line passes Ingliston Park & Ride and Gogarburn before reaching Edinburgh Gateway and the Gyle Centre. It continues through Edinburgh Park, then runs beside the railway through Bankhead, Saughton and Balgreen to Murrayfield Stadium and Haymarket.

Beyond Haymarket, trams follow streets through the West End and along Princes Street, turning towards St Andrew Square and Picardy Place. The route then descends Leith Walk, serving McDonald Road and Balfour Street, before entering Constitution Street at Foot of the Walk. After The Shore, it turns towards the docklands, passing Port of Leith and Ocean Terminal before reaching the terminus beside Lindsay Road at Newhaven.
