Tram systems in Odense
Odense is situated near the centre of the island of Funen and is the third-largest city in Denmark. It is the principal commercial, educational and administrative centre of the island and the largest city in the Region of Southern Denmark.
The city can trace its history to the Viking period and takes its name from the Norse god Odin. Its historic centre includes Saint Canute's Cathedral, while Odense is internationally associated with the author Hans Christian Andersen, who was born in the city in 1805.
Modern Odense has substantial healthcare, university and technology sectors. The University of Southern Denmark, Odense University Hospital and a growing cluster of robotics and automation companies are located in the southern and southeastern parts of the city.
Odense Banegård Center is the city's principal public transport interchange. Intercity and regional trains provide connections towards Copenhagen, Jutland and destinations across Funen, while the neighbouring bus terminal is served by urban and regional routes.
Local public transport comprises Odense Letbane and an extensive bus network coordinated through FynBus. The light railway provides the principal high-capacity corridor across the city, connecting the northwestern suburbs, railway station, city centre, shopping districts, university campus and southern residential areas.
Hjallese station, at the southern end of the light railway, provides interchange with regional trains on the railway between Odense and Svendborg. A Park and Ride facility beside the motorway at Parkering Odense Syd allows passengers arriving by car to transfer to the light rail.
Odense has a standard-gauge electric light-rail system known as Odense Letbane. Its single 14.5-kilometre route runs between Tarup in the northwest and Hjallese in the south, serving 26 stations.
From Tarup, the line passes through Bolbro and the western inner city before serving Odense Banegård, the pedestrianised city centre and the redevelopment corridor east of the centre. It then continues through Korsløkke and the Rosengårdcentret commercial district to the University of Southern Denmark, the new Odense University Hospital and Hjallese.
Much of the line uses segregated track, including extensive sections of grassed formation, while trams pass through pedestrianised streets in the city centre. The fleet comprises 16 five-section Stadler Variobahn low-floor trams, and services are operated by Keolis.
The usual weekday daytime frequency is every seven and a half minutes, with less frequent services during evenings and quieter periods. Weekend frequencies were increased in August 2026 in response to growing leisure use of the system. Further information is available from Odense Letbane.
Odense's first tramway opened on 9 September 1911. Unlike the horse-drawn systems that preceded electric operation in several other Danish cities, the Odense network was electrically operated and built to standard gauge from the outset.
The initial main line connected Fruens Bøge in the south with Odense's principal railway station. It was extended northwards to Bülowsvej on 6 October 1911, creating a cross-city route through the centre.
The undertaking was operated by A/S Odense elektriske Sporvei. Its original fleet comprised two-axle motor cars and trailers supplied with electrical equipment by the Swedish company ASEA.
A branch between the city centre and the harbour opened on 3 July 1913. The route was shortened later that year, but it continued to provide a connection between the northern inner city and the harbour district.
Odense Municipality acquired complete control of the tramway company in 1919. Municipal ownership allowed tram and later bus services to be developed as part of a coordinated urban transport system.
The southern end of the main line was extended from Fruens Bøge to Hunderup Skov on 10 November 1923. The route served a popular recreational area as well as growing residential districts south of the city centre.
The harbour branch closed in March 1926. It was replaced by a new tramway along Skibhusvej to Bøgebjergvej, which opened on 30 May 1926 and provided a more useful service to the expanding Skibhus residential district.
The main line was realigned through the city centre in 1928, passing south of the town hall. By this time the tramway consisted of the principal route between Bülowsvej and Hunderup Skov together with the Skibhus branch.
The Skibhus tramway closed on 3 July 1939 and was replaced by Odense's first trolleybus route the following month. Trolleybuses were seen as a way of retaining electric public transport while avoiding the cost and inflexibility associated with tram tracks.
After the Second World War, buses and trolleybuses became increasingly important as Odense expanded beyond the reach of its compact tram network. Modernisation of the remaining tramway would have required substantial investment in infrastructure and rolling stock.
The last surviving tram route closed on 30 June 1952. Trolleybuses replaced trams between the railway station and Hunderup Skov, leaving Odense without street-running rail transport for almost 70 years.
The trolleybus system itself closed in November 1959, after which urban public transport was provided entirely by conventional buses. Several vehicles from the former tramway, including motor car 12, have been preserved at the Danish Tramway Museum at Skjoldenæsholm.
The possibility of restoring trams emerged during the first decade of the twenty-first century as Odense planned substantial development around the university, hospital and southeastern parts of the city.
A modern light railway was proposed in 2008. The project was intended both to improve public transport and to support the redevelopment of streets and urban districts along a continuous corridor across the city.
The Danish government, Region of Southern Denmark and Odense Municipality agreed to finance the first stage. The legislation required for construction was adopted in 2015, and Odense Letbane P/S was established to deliver the project.
Preparatory relocation of pipes, cables and other utilities began during 2015. Major street reconstruction and civil engineering followed from 2017, with the project including new track, stations, overhead electrical equipment, a control centre and a depot at Hjallese.
The first Stadler Variobahn tram arrived in Odense in February 2020. Testing and driver training followed as sections of the line and its control systems were completed.
Opening was delayed while technical, regulatory and safety work continued. Passenger services eventually began on 28 May 2022, restoring tram-based urban transport to Odense almost 70 years after closure of the original system.
The new light railway substantially changed the organisation of public transport through central Odense. It also formed part of a wider transformation that removed through motor traffic from former main roads and created new pedestrian spaces and development sites.
Passenger use increased following the first full year of operation. The light railway carried almost 5.8 million passengers in 2023, approximately 6.9 million in 2024 and nearly 7.4 million during 2025.
Services have progressively been adjusted in response to demand. A new timetable introduced in August 2026 added 88 weekend journeys, increasing frequencies on Friday evenings and during the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays.
The current fleet limits the maximum regular frequency to one tram every seven and a half minutes. Future growth and construction of the second stage will therefore require additional rolling stock as well as new infrastructure.
Odense is preparing a second stage of the light railway to serve the northeastern districts of Vollsmose and Seden. The principal new section will leave the existing route at Korsløkke and continue through Vollsmose to Seden Lokalcenter.
The revised corridor is approximately five kilometres long and is expected to have seven stations, five of them within the Vollsmose district. It is intended to improve public transport in northeastern Odense and support the extensive redevelopment of Vollsmose.
Preliminary work on stage 2 began in 2019, and an earlier environmental assessment was consulted upon in 2021 before the project was placed on hold. A majority of Odense City Council agreed in September 2024 to revive and implement the project.
The updated scheme is undergoing a new environmental assessment together with the preparation of a local plan and amendments to the municipal planning framework. The council continued to support the project following a substantial increase in its estimated cost during 2026.
Construction has not yet begun, and a reliable opening date has not been established. The project remains dependent upon completion of its environmental and planning procedures, confirmation of its final scope and agreement on the increased funding requirement. Stage 2 also includes a shorter western branch from the existing route near the junction of Vestre Stationsvej and Vesterbro to Sukkerkogeriet. The branch would provide a terminating facility close to the city centre and create a second route through the central section of the existing network.
Current operating proposals envisage a new line 2 running from Seden through Vollsmose and the city centre to Sukkerkogeriet. A possible additional line 3 could connect Seden with Hjallese, using the southeastern part of the present route.
The precise service pattern and infrastructure included in the project remain subject to further design and political decisions. Additional trams will be required, but the Stadler Variobahn model used by the present fleet is no longer in production, contributing to the increased cost of the scheme.
Earlier planning has examined extending the western branch beyond Sukkerkogeriet towards Odense Zoo and Dalum. Other strategic concepts have included routes from Seden towards Munkebo and Kerteminde and from Tarup towards Søndersø.
These corridors could eventually extend the benefits of the light railway beyond the existing urban route and provide new public transport connections across Funen. They have not, however, been adopted as funded construction projects.
The immediate focus remains the stage 2 connection through Vollsmose to Seden and the associated branch to Sukkerkogeriet. No construction or opening dates have been established for the longer-term extensions.
