About Greater Copenhagen

Greater Copenhagen is the metropolitan area centred on Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark. It occupies the eastern part of the island of Zealand beside the Øresund, opposite the Swedish city of Malmö.

Copenhagen developed from a medieval trading settlement into the political, commercial and cultural centre of Denmark. Its historic districts include Indre By and Christianshavn, while prominent landmarks include Christiansborg Palace, Amalienborg, the old harbour at Nyhavn and the Tivoli Gardens.

The wider metropolitan area extends through Copenhagen, the independent municipality of Frederiksberg and numerous surrounding suburban municipalities. Much of its twentieth-century development followed radial transport corridors extending from the central city, an approach formalised through the regional Finger Plan.

Overview of public transport in Greater Copenhagen

Public transport across Greater Copenhagen includes the Copenhagen Metro, S-trains, regional and long-distance trains, buses, harbour buses and the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail. Most services share an integrated fare system administered through Din Offentlige Transport, commonly known as DOT.

København H is the principal railway station, while Nørreport is a major interchange between regional trains, S-trains and the metro. Copenhagen Airport is connected with the city centre by both metro and main-line trains.

The S-train and metro networks provide principally radial and central connections. The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail complements them with an orbital route across the western and northern suburbs, allowing passengers to travel between suburban centres without passing through central Copenhagen.

Greater Copenhagen's current light-rail system

Greater Copenhagen has a standard-gauge light-rail line officially known in Danish as Hovedstadens Letbane. The approximately 28-kilometre route runs between Ishøj in the southwest and Lundtofte in the north, serving 29 stations.

The line follows the Ring 3 corridor and serves municipalities outside Copenhagen's administrative boundary. It connects residential areas, employment districts, the Technical University of Denmark and hospitals at Glostrup and Herlev.

Interchanges with the S-train network are provided at Ishøj, Vallensbæk, Glostrup, Herlev, Buddinge and Lyngby. Connections are also available with numerous local and regional bus services.

Most of the route is double-track and segregated from other traffic, although it crosses roads at numerous signal-controlled junctions. Services are operated by Metro Service using a fleet of four-section Siemens Avenio low-floor vehicles.

The completed line opened throughout on 22 August 2026. During the initial running-in period, trams operate every five to eight minutes for much of the day and every ten minutes during evenings and on Sundays. A regular five-minute daytime frequency is intended once full operation has become established.

Copenhagen's first horse tramways

Denmark's first street tramway opened in Copenhagen on 22 October 1863. The horse-drawn route connected Frederiksberg Runddel with the city centre by way of Frederiksberg Allé and Vesterbrogade.

Several private companies subsequently developed routes across Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. These early tramways used different operating arrangements and were not initially planned as a unified network.

A steam-operated suburban tramway opened northwards from Hellerup towards Charlottenlund and Klampenborg in 1884. Although steam traction was not widely adopted for urban operation, the route helped extend tramway travel beyond the densely built central districts.

Electrification and consolidation

Experimental battery-powered electric trams began operating on Nørrebrogade in March 1897. The first route using conventional overhead electrical equipment followed in September 1899, and electrification then spread rapidly across the network.

De kjøbenhavnske Sporveje was formed in 1898 to consolidate several of the principal private operators. A uniform numbered route system was introduced in November 1902 as the formerly separate lines became more closely integrated.

Copenhagen Municipality assumed control of most of the network in 1911 and operated it through Københavns Sporveje. The last horse-drawn service ended in June 1915, while the separate Frederiksberg municipal tramway was incorporated into the Copenhagen system in 1919.

Development of the municipal network

The tramway expanded alongside the growth of Copenhagen and its surrounding districts. Routes served Frederiksberg, Valby, Brønshøj, Hellerup, Sundby and other developing neighbourhoods beyond the historic centre.

At its greatest extent, the network comprised approximately 100 kilometres of route and as many as 18 regular lines. Trams became one of the principal forms of everyday transport across Copenhagen and remained heavily used through both world wars.

The system operated conventional two-axle motor cars and trailers for much of its history. Successive generations introduced enclosed platforms, greater capacity and improved passenger accommodation, but many older vehicles remained in service for several decades.

Post-war modernisation and closure

Growing car ownership, traffic congestion and changing transport policy placed increasing pressure on the tramway after the Second World War. Some routes were replaced by buses, which were considered more flexible and did not require fixed street infrastructure.

The network nevertheless received 100 modern articulated trams manufactured by Düwag between 1960 and 1966. These vehicles provided greater capacity and represented a substantial modernisation of the fleet.

The investment did not prevent the decision to abandon the system. Closures accelerated during the 1960s as buses replaced successive routes and development of the S-train network continued. Copenhagen's final tram route, line 5, operated for the last time on 22 April 1972.

Many of the relatively new articulated cars were subsequently sold to Alexandria in Egypt. Examples of Copenhagen's earlier tram fleets have been preserved at the Danish Tramway Museum at Skjoldenæsholm.

Planning an orbital light railway

Proposals for a modern light railway emerged from the need to improve public transport between the suburban municipalities along Ring 3. Existing railways principally carried passengers towards central Copenhagen, while journeys between suburbs often depended on buses operating in congested road traffic.

The Danish state, the Capital Region and participating municipalities reached a cooperation agreement in 2011. A more detailed political agreement followed in 2013, and the company Ring 3 Letbane I/S was established in 2014 to develop the project.

Environmental assessment and public consultation took place during 2015. The Danish Parliament adopted the construction legislation on 31 May 2016, by which time the project had received the official name Hovedstadens Letbane.

The owners approved the final project and principal contracts in March 2018. Preparatory utility diversions began during that year, followed by major civil engineering work from 2019 and track construction from 2022.

Opening of the light railway

Testing began as completed sections of track and electrical infrastructure became available. The control centre, depot and workshops were constructed at Glostrup, close to the middle of the route.

The southern section between Ishøj and Rødovre Nord opened on 26 October 2025. It comprised 12 stations and introduced light-rail operation to the southwestern part of the Ring 3 corridor.

Construction, testing and driver training continued on the northern section through Herlev, Gladsaxe, Buddinge and Lyngby. The remaining 17 stations opened on 22 August 2026, completing the route to Lundtofte. Approximately 50,000 journeys were made during the public opening celebrations.

The completed light railway marked the return of tram-based urban transport to the Copenhagen metropolitan area 54 years after the traditional street tramway had closed. It did not, however, restore trams to Copenhagen Municipality itself, as the entire new route serves the surrounding suburban municipalities. Establishing the full service

The immediate priority is to complete the operational introduction of the new light railway. Following the opening of the northern section in August 2026, Metro Service is progressively adjusting traffic signals, running times and operating arrangements using experience gained across the complete route.

Daytime services initially operate at intervals of between five and eight minutes. Once the running-in period has been completed, the operator intends to provide a consistent five-minute frequency for most of the day.

The completed line is expected to carry approximately 14 million passengers annually by 2030. Development around stations and changes to connecting bus services are likely to influence ridership as the light railway becomes established within the metropolitan transport network. Possible northern extensions

Several possible extensions beyond Lundtofte have been examined. Shorter alternatives would continue the light railway towards Nærum station or Gammel Holte, while a longer corridor could extend through the northern suburbs to Kokkedal station.

The routes would improve orbital public transport in municipalities north of the present terminus and could provide additional connections with the S-train and regional railway networks. A screening study found that the Kokkedal alternative would attract the greatest ridership of the northern options.

These proposals remain at an early study stage. No preferred northern alignment has been selected, and funding, construction approval and an opening programme have not been established.

Possible extensions towards Avedøre Holme

Potential southern and western extensions have also been investigated. One alternative would begin at Gladsaxe Trafikplads and continue through the western suburbs towards Avedøre Holme. Another would branch from the existing light railway near Glostrup or Kirkebjerg and serve areas including Brøndby before reaching Avedøre Holme.

The longer Gladsaxe–Avedøre Holme corridor was forecast to generate the greatest overall increase in light-rail use among the alternatives examined. A route through Brøndby could provide more direct local connections while requiring a shorter addition to the existing system.

Neither alternative has progressed into a committed construction project. Further feasibility work, political agreement between the affected municipalities and region, environmental assessment and a funding package would all be required before an extension could proceed.
