Tram systems in Minsk
Minsk stands on the Svislach River in the centre of Belarus. It is the country's capital and largest city, with a population of approximately two million, and is administered separately from the surrounding Minsk Region.
The city was largely destroyed during the Second World War and subsequently rebuilt with broad avenues, extensive public spaces and monumental architecture. Important landmarks include Independence Square, Victory Square, the historic Upper Town and the National Library of Belarus. Minsk is the country's principal administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre.
Public transport in Minsk includes the Metro, trams, trolleybuses, conventional buses and electric buses. Most surface services are operated by the state-owned Minsktrans undertaking, while the Metro is managed as a separate municipal organisation.
Minsk-Pasažyrski is the city's principal railway station and is located beside the Central bus station. It is served by long-distance and regional trains, while urban and suburban rail services provide additional connections across the metropolitan area. Minsk National Airport is situated approximately 40 kilometres east of the city and is connected with Minsk by bus and coach services.
The Metro forms the principal rapid-transit network, while Minsk also has one of the world's largest trolleybus systems. The tramway serves a more limited group of corridors but remains an important part of the public transport network in the northern, eastern and southeastern districts.
Minsk has a 1,524-millimetre broad-gauge electric tram network operated by Minsktrans. The physical network extends for approximately 32 kilometres and is normally served by eight routes numbered 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11.
The network is formed around a central corridor through the streets of Kazlova and Zmitraka Biaduli. Northern branches continue towards Zialiony Luh and the former Ozero terminus, while eastern and southeastern routes serve the Tractor Works and Sierabranka districts. Several services cross the city by combining sections of these branches.
Reconstruction around Staravilenski Trakt resulted in the closure of the Ozero turning loop in July 2026. Lines 3 and 5 presently use a new terminus near the Minsk State Palace of Children and Youth, while line 4 is not operating during the current arrangements.
The fleet is based principally on AKSM-60102 trams manufactured in Minsk by Belkommunmash, supplemented by a small number of longer AKSM-843 vehicles. Twenty modern low-floor BKM T811 trams were delivered during 2024 and began entering passenger service in January 2025.
Minsk's first permanent form of urban rail transport was a horse-drawn tramway, which opened on 10 May 1892. Its initial routes connected the city's Brest and Vilna railway stations with the central area.
The horse tramway expanded as the city grew, although services were interrupted between 1918 and 1921 during the upheaval following the First World War and the Russian Revolution. Operation resumed after the conflict but ended in March 1928 as Minsk prepared to construct an electric tramway.
Proposals for electric traction had first appeared as early as 1898, and the city authorities considered several possible networks before the First World War. Economic and political disruption prevented these schemes from being implemented at the time.
Minsk's electric tramway opened on 13 October 1929 with two routes. One connected the freight railway station with Kamarouka, while the other ran between the passenger station and Freedom Square. Five motor cars were initially available for service.
The new transport system proved immediately popular. Trams carried approximately eleven million passengers during their first year, and daily use quickly reached between 18,000 and 19,000 passengers. The tramway was also used for carrying freight.
Expansion followed rapidly. Lines were extended towards Storozhovka and the Exhibition terminus near the present Chelyuskinites Park, while new routes served industrial districts and developing residential areas. By 1934, Minsk had seven tram routes, approximately 33 kilometres of track and 56 passenger vehicles.
Further growth increased the operational network to almost 37 kilometres by 1939. The fleet had reached 70 passenger cars, and the tramway carried approximately 50 million passengers during that year.
Tram operation ceased after the German occupation of Minsk in 1941. A limited service was restored by the occupation authorities in 1943, using four cars on a single route between the freight station and the Exhibition terminus.
The system was almost completely destroyed during the war. Sections of track and overhead wiring were removed, electrical equipment was taken away and the tram depot and much of the surviving fleet were damaged or destroyed.
Reconstruction began in October 1944. Replacement vehicles were obtained from Moscow and other Soviet cities, and passenger services resumed on 1 May 1945 between the city centre and Chelyuskinites Park. Further routes were progressively restored during the late 1940s.
A new line from Zmitraka Biaduli Square along Kazlova and Dauhabrodskaja streets reached the Minsk Tractor Works in 1950. It was extended towards the automobile factory in 1953, establishing the principal eastern tram corridor.
Expansion continued during the second half of the 1950s. New routes opened towards Ozero, Volgogradskaya and the Radiator Works, while existing sections were altered as streets and public spaces were reconstructed.
The northern line was extended along Lahojski Trakt to Zialiony Luh in 1965. A new tram depot capable of accommodating approximately 250 vehicles opened in Bataničnaja Street in 1967 and remains the system's only operational depot.
The opening of Minsk's first trolleybus route in 1952 introduced a competing form of electric transport that was easier to extend into newly developed districts. Tram expansion slowed during the 1960s, and several central and western routes were subsequently replaced by trolleybuses or buses.
Lines through parts of the historic centre, along Kalvaryjskaja Street and towards the former Radiator Works were removed between the late 1960s and the 1970s. The surviving system increasingly concentrated on the northern, eastern and southeastern corridors.
Construction of the Minsk Metro brought further changes. Tram service along Partyzanski Avenue was suspended in 1990 during construction of the Metro's second line. Although reinstatement was initially proposed, the tram tracks were ultimately removed.
Other sections were transferred to reserved alignments to separate trams from road traffic. The route along Mašerava Avenue between Kujbyšava and Daumana streets was moved onto a segregated alignment in 1989.
Riga-built RVZ-6 trams and their later variants became the principal vehicles in Minsk from the mid-1960s. A total of more than 250 operated in the city, and between 1979 and 1991 they formed the entire passenger fleet.
Twenty-four Tatra T6B5 trams arrived from Czechoslovakia in 1991. During the following decade, Minsk also experimented with rebuilt RVZ vehicles and second-hand Düwag articulated trams acquired from Karlsruhe in Germany.
Locally manufactured AKSM-60102 trams began entering service in 2001 and eventually replaced the remaining RVZ and Tatra vehicles. The final RVZ cars were withdrawn from regular operation in 2008, while the last Tatra T6B5 left passenger service in 2012.
Four three-section AKSM-843 trams entered service from 2009. Although they offered considerably greater capacity and partial low-floor access, the shorter AKSM-60102 remained the dominant type across the network.
Minsk began a programme of track reconstruction during the 2000s. Sections were rebuilt using continuously welded or specially isolated track intended to reduce noise and vibration. A major project along Jakuba Kolasa Street was completed in 2008.
Twenty fully low-floor BKM T811 trams were delivered during 2024. The first two entered passenger service on lines 1 and 4 on 26 January 2025. The new cars introduced step-free boarding, air conditioning, passenger information screens, CCTV and USB charging facilities.
The northern route to Ozero was reconstructed between March and May 2025 in connection with utility diversions and construction of the northern extension of the Zelenaluzhskaya Metro line. A further project began in 2026 to remove the Ozero terminus and reconstruct Staravilenski Trakt.
The former Ozero turning loop at Staravilenski Trakt and Shchedrina Street has been removed as part of a wider reconstruction of the northern road network. A replacement tram loop has been constructed farther south near the Minsk State Palace of Children and Youth.
The first stage entered use in July 2026, when lines 3 and 5 were shortened to the new terminus and line 4 was withdrawn. Subsequent stages include removing the remaining tram infrastructure around Ozero, widening sections of Staravilenski Trakt and Dauhinauski Trakt and rebuilding the junction with Arlouskaja Street.
The project is expected to introduce its final road and public transport arrangements during 2027. It has not yet been confirmed whether line 4 will return in its previous form once construction is complete. Further information is available from the Minsk City Executive Committee.
Current development plans for southeastern Minsk include new tram infrastructure along Rakasoŭskaha Avenue and an extension from the existing tracks in Sierabranka. The line would continue along Jakubava Street towards Malinina Street and serve developing residential areas towards Loshitsa.
The proposal also includes relocation of the present Sierabranka turning loop and extension of Jakubava Street towards Trascianieckaja Street. Space for tram tracks has previously been protected along parts of the planned corridor.
The tramway forms part of wider planning for the Sierabranka and Loshitsa districts and is associated with development expected by approximately 2030. However, a confirmed construction programme, route allocation and opening date have not yet been published.
The latest Minsk general plan proposes developing higher-speed electric transport using the existing tram network as its foundation. New segregated routes are envisaged along radial corridors between Metro lines and along orbital routes that do not require passengers to travel through the city centre.
The longer-term corridors identified in the plan include connections towards the Northern Shore development, Sukharevo in western Minsk and Sierabranka in the southeast. The intention is to give trams greater separation from road traffic and priority at junctions so that they can provide faster and more reliable journeys.
These schemes remain strategic planning concepts rather than approved construction projects. Individual alignments, costs and delivery dates have not been confirmed. Further information is available from the Minsk general-plan consultation.
A more developed rapid-tram proposal previously envisaged a route from the city centre to the large Sukharevo residential district. It would have used new segregated infrastructure and sections of the existing network, providing a lower-cost alternative to extending the Metro.
The city authorities announced in January 2022 that this particular project was no longer under consideration, with investment instead directed towards the Metro, electric buses and trolleybuses capable of operating away from overhead wiring.
Sukharevo has subsequently reappeared as a possible corridor in the longer-term general plan, but this does not represent the revival of the earlier project. A new feasibility study and formal approval would be required before a rapid-tram scheme could proceed.
