Tram systems in Mazyr
Mazyr is situated on the River Pripyat in the Gomel Region of southern Belarus, approximately 130 kilometres west of Gomel. It is the administrative centre of the Mazyr District and has a population of slightly more than 100,000.
The city occupies the undulating terrain of the Mazyr Ridge, giving it a more varied landscape than is typical of much of Belarus. The Pripyat divides the historic city from areas to the north and has long supported river transport and industry. Mazyr is an important industrial centre whose principal activities include oil refining, chemical production, salt extraction and food processing.
Urban public transport is provided principally by buses and minibuses, supplemented by the tramway along the eastern side of the city. The tram does not serve the historic centre or most districts west of the River Pripyat; its principal function is to connect residential areas with settlements and industrial sites southeast of the city.
Mazyr railway station, historically known as Kozenki, is situated away from the central area and is reached by local bus services. Kalinkavichy, approximately ten kilometres north of Mazyr, is the region's principal railway junction and provides a wider range of connections.
Mazyr has a broad-gauge electric tramway connecting the Tramway Administration depot with the Mazyr Oil Refinery. The approximately 19.6-kilometre route begins in the eastern part of the city and continues through suburban settlements and open countryside before reaching the refinery and surrounding industrial area.
The system is owned and operated by the tramway department of the Mazyr Oil Refinery rather than by the municipal public transport operator. Its timetable is strongly influenced by refinery shift patterns, with frequent express services at peak times. Some express journeys omit the suburban stops when travelling towards the refinery in the morning or towards the city after the principal afternoon shift.
In addition to the full-length service, selected journeys terminate at intermediate turning loops at Kryničny and Penki. The route is almost entirely separated from other traffic outside the urban area, giving parts of the system the character of an interurban or light railway rather than a conventional street tramway.
Most services have traditionally been formed of pairs of KTM-5 trams. Modern low-floor BKM T811 vehicles began entering service in 2024 and also operate in coupled pairs to provide the capacity required at refinery shift changes.
The development of Mazyr's tramway was directly connected with the construction and expansion of the Mazyr Oil Refinery, situated approximately eighteen kilometres southeast of the city. The refinery employed several thousand people, creating a concentrated demand for transport at the beginning and end of each working shift.
An initial design for the tram depot was prepared by the Beltransproekt institute in 1973, and preliminary construction began during the same year. The project subsequently stalled because of insufficient funding, leaving the proposed tramway incomplete for more than a decade.
A revised design was commissioned in June 1984. Construction of the depot, track, electrical supply and associated facilities resumed in January 1986 under the direction of the oil refinery.
Passenger services began on 1 August 1988 between Mazyr and the oil refinery. Unlike traditional city tramways that developed gradually through successive extensions, Mazyr opened as a purpose-built system with a single principal corridor and a clearly defined industrial role.
The line was constructed to the 1,524-millimetre broad gauge widely used by tramways in the former Soviet Union and electrified through an overhead supply. Intermediate turning loops were provided so that additional services could operate over the busiest portions of the route.
The original fleet consisted of KTM-5 trams manufactured by the Ust-Katav Carriage Works. Vehicles were delivered before the opening and in further batches between 1988 and 1994, eventually creating a passenger fleet of 47 cars. Most were arranged in permanently or semi-permanently coupled pairs to carry the large numbers of passengers travelling during refinery shift changes.
The tramway remained part of the Mazyr Oil Refinery after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This unusual ownership arrangement helped preserve its original role and avoided the repeated changes of operator experienced by many other former Soviet tram systems.
The basic infrastructure and service pattern changed relatively little. The full route continued to connect the depot with the refinery, while express and short-working services were operated according to passenger demand. The fleet was maintained to a high standard despite consisting almost entirely of vehicles dating from the system's opening years.
The tram also developed a secondary role for the settlements along its route. Residents of places including Kryničny, Penki, Bibiki and Mikhalki could use selected services for journeys into Mazyr or towards the industrial area, although the timetable continued to be arranged primarily around employment at the refinery.
A major fleet renewal began in July 2024 when Mazyr received its first BKM T811 low-floor trams from the Belarusian manufacturer BKM Holding. These were the first new passenger trams acquired for the system since the early 1990s and made Mazyr the first city in Belarus to operate the T811 type.
The first coupled pair entered passenger service on 31 July 2024, immediately before the tramway's 36th anniversary. Further deliveries increased the new fleet to ten vehicles. The trams provide low-floor boarding, air conditioning, passenger information equipment, CCTV and improved accessibility compared with the KTM-5 cars they are progressively replacing.
The arrival of the BKM T811 vehicles represents the beginning of a longer-term renewal of Mazyr's tram fleet. The original procurement programme envisaged the eventual acquisition of approximately 28 low-floor cars, allowing a substantial proportion of the KTM-5 fleet dating from the late 1980s and early 1990s to be replaced.
Ten T811 trams have so far entered the fleet. Earlier plans envisaged purchasing the remaining vehicles in further batches, although a confirmed timetable for completing the full programme is not currently available. The continuation of deliveries would allow more services to be operated by accessible, air-conditioned vehicles while retaining the coupled operation required during refinery shift changes.
BKM Holding is developing technology intended to support increasingly automated tram operation and has identified Mazyr as a possible location for initial trials. The system's largely segregated alignment, limited route complexity and connection with a single depot make it more suitable for controlled testing than a large urban tram network.
Mazyr is presently being considered as a potential test location rather than confirmed for the introduction of driverless passenger services. No trial date, operating specification or programme for regular autonomous operation has been announced. Further information is available from the Belarusian Telegraph Agency.
Mazyr's 2004 general development plan proposed increasing the tram network from approximately 20 to 34.5 kilometres. Its first stage was to be a 2.8-kilometre branch towards Mazyr railway station at Kozenki, using Neftebudavnikau Street and connecting with the existing tramway near the urban section of the route.
The plan also reserved a possible future tram alignment along Matrosov Street and across a proposed third bridge over the Pripyat towards Kalinkavichy. Neither scheme progressed to construction, and the original target dates have long passed.
There is presently no evidence of an active construction programme for either extension. They should therefore be regarded as unimplemented long-term planning proposals rather than committed projects. The current focus appears to be renewal of the vehicle fleet and possible testing of new operating technology rather than expansion of the tramway.
