About Algiers

Algiers (الجزائر in Arabic) is the capital of Algeria, and is located in the north of the country on the Mediterranean Sea. The modern part of the city is built on level ground by the shore, but the old part climbs the steep hill behind the modern part and is crowned by the casbah 122m above the sea.

Overview of public transport in Algiers

Algiers has 54 lines of urban and suburban bus lines that operate in Algiers and the surrounding suburbs and provide a service between 5:30am and 12:45am. There are also commuter railway lines operated by the national railroad company SNTF. Algiers also has a metro system and a tram system, both of which currently have 1 line and have suffered financial difficulties that have resulted in slow progress in completing the projects. The city also has four urban cable cars and is served by Houari Boumediene Airport, which is located about 20km from the city

Algiers' current tram system

Algiers' modern day tramsway, Tramwāy al-Jazā'ir al-`Āṣimah (ترامواي الجزائر العاصمة‎), is operated by SETRAM, which operates all of the tram systems in Algeria and also maintains them. The networks single line runs between Ruisseau and Dergana. The line opened in May 2011 with a limited service over part of the proposed network and further expansion has taken it to its current set up with a total length of 23.2km.
