About Ouargla

Ouargla (ورجلان، ورقلة in Arabic) is located in the Sahara Desert in southern Algeria and is the capital of Ouargla Province. Ouargla is the home to the University of Ouargla and has a flourishing oil industry. Until the civil unrest in the 1990s, the city was a major tourist attraction, with many visitors shopping in the souq for local crafts and sand roses.

The city has two bus and coach stations, one that is located to the southwest of the city and the other in the center of the city. The city also has a single line tram system as detailed below.

Ouargla's current tram system

Ouargla's modern day tramway is operated by SETRAM, which operates all of the tram systems in Algeria and also maintains them. The network's single line runs between Chenine Kadour to the west of the city and Sid Rouhou in the center of the city. The line opened in 2018.
