Tram systems in Oran

About Oran

Oran (وهران in Arabic) is Algeria's second largest city and is a major coastal city located in the northwest of the country. The name of the city is derived from the Berber root hr, which means lion and a popular local legend says that in 900AD, there were sightings of lions in the area.

Overview of public transport in Oran

Oran has limited public transport, which does not sufficiently cover the non-urban zones, and a large part of the transport is provided by an extensive network of "clandestine" taxis. The local transport company ETO (Enterprise of Oranian Transport) runs a network of buses and the Oran Tramway opened in May 2013. The city is also served by the Ahmed Ben Bella Airport, which provides domestic and international flights. The city also has a number of railway stations offering connections to other cities in the country.

Oran's current tram system

Oran's modern day tramway is operated by SETRAM, which operates all of the tram systems in Algeria and also maintains them. The network's single line runs between Es Senia Université in the south of the city and Gare Routière de Sidi Maarouf, to the east of the city. The opening of the single line was delayed a number of times, but finally took place in May 2013. The line has 32 stops and a length of approximately 19km.
